Electrifying Stylish R-Line

March 17, 2020, Kuala Lumpur – Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia, the official distributor of Volkswagen vehicles in Malaysia, has launched the Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition in May last year.

The writer spent a couple of days with the Volkswagen Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition, and enjoyed every moment of it.

Powering the Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition is the identical engine that is available in the standard 1.4 TSI R-Line, which is the 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, paired with the seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

Don’t assume the 1.4-litre engine capacity is underpower, it is powerful enough to keep up with most 1.8-litre cars. It generates 148 hp and 250 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. While cruising on the highway with an average speed of 110 kph, it can easily clock 5.2 litres per 100km (l/100km).

On paper, the Golf 1.4 TSI R-Line is able to complete the century sprint in 8.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 216 kph. It has a fuel economy rating of 5.4 l/100km following the NEDC standards.

It is very fun to drive the Golf R-Line around town. The size of the hot hatch is perfect for city driving and also taking a small family out during weekends. It sits firmly during corners, gripped on the road as if it was nailed to the ground, and very responsive to steering’s direction, as well as provided accurate feedback to the driver.

There are also four drive modes – Sport, Eco, Normal and Individual to suit the driver’s requirement. The system will adjust the steering’s input, throttle response and gear shifts.

The Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition shares most of the accessories available in the standard Golf 1.4 TSI R-Line, such as the 17-inch ‘Singapore’ alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, R-Line styling kits – dedicated front and rear bumpers, radiator grille with chrome strip, R-Line badges, a rear spoiler, a sports rear diffuser and the twin trapezoidal chrome exhaust trim, 8-inch infotainment system, full LED headlamps with daytime running lights and the LED taillights with dynamic indicators, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, leather upholstery, rear air-vents, chilled glove compartment and many more.

At the same time, it has extra accessories which are worth RM 4,000, which consists of the 300-watt German car audio specialist Helix soundbar, and VW Tint window film, as well as the Sound & Style emblem.

The writer finds that the interior of the Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition was very comfortable, elegantly and modern. Space wise, a large frame adult has generous headroom, shoulder room and legroom in front, however, if there’s a tall adult sitting in front, then the rear occupants might not have much legroom to stretch around.

A few features the writer would like to highlight is the beautiful 12.3-inch instrument cluster provides clear and customisable information, the side mirror adjustment switches is cleverly located at the door handle, right next to the central locking buttons, chilled glove compartment to cool down your storage after parking under the hot sun, and the cleverly concealed entertainment system that is located in the glove compartment. There is also the cruise control and speed limiter to give the driver a peace-of-mind during long distance driving.

Over at the back, it still have sufficient boot space to carry a large baby stroller, or even a few hand carry size luggage, despite the Helix soundbar has taken some space out of it. One can still fit some small bags above of the soundbar, because it is very solid. At the same time, there is a 12-volt power socket to power up some gadgets and a shopping bag hook to keep the bags in place.

With the Helix soundbar, rest assured, the sound quality is loud and excellently tuned. It has powerful solid bass, at the same time a sharp and clear treble clarity. Audiophiles will able to enjoy good quality music with these system. However, if one seeking of live orchestra quality, then maybe an upgrade of speakers will easily get the job done.

As for the safety features, the Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition is equipped with seven airbags, electronic stability control, proactive occupant protection system, anti-lock braking system, brakeforce distribution, brake pad wear indicator, engine drag torque control, hill hold control, tyre pressure loss indicator, maneuver braking that automatically brakes the car when it senses objects up to 10kph during parking, automatic post collision brake system, rear assist, advanced electronic differential lock and ISOFIX child seat anchor points.

Overall, the writer finds that the hot hatch is a practical, safe, comfortable and fun-to-drive everyday car. Of course, there are some points to improve on. It will be nice if the Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition is equipped with blindspot warning system, and also ambient lighting. Apart from that, one of the major concern is the price, because at that price, one has plenty of options in the market.

However, let’s not forget that all Volkswagen Golf variants are fully imported, therefore, there are many tariffs, taxes or levies that was imposed to it.

The Volkswagen Golf R-Line Sound & Style Edition is priced at RM 177,390, excluding road tax and insurance. It is covered with a 3-year free maintenance with 15,000km interval, 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, and 5-year roadside assistance.
